Ellen K. Stehouwer, DO

“The body has an inherent ability to heal itself. My role as a physician is to act as a partner in the health care of my patients through listening, facilitating healing and education.” This philosophy drives Dr. Stehouwer, who tries to treat her patients as a whole, not just medically. “Family Medicine gives me the chance to develop long-lasting relationships and see people as more than just an ailment in room seven.”

It’s hard to imagine someone with such a natural approach to health care once strolled a different career path. After earning her Bachelor’s in Family Life Studies and Education Home Economics from Michigan State University, Stehouwer started her professional life as a home economics teacher. But she soon realized family medicine was a calling she could not ignore. She pursued her Doctor of Osteopathy at Michigan State University’s CollegeEllen Stehouwer of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed residency at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, where she was Chief Resident. Stehouwer is now a board-certified physician approaching a decade of practice. “The highlight of my medical career has been the times when people have thanked me and said ‘wow, you made a big difference for me.’ The highlights are really those connections you make with people… finding out you really did make a difference when you weren’t sure that you did.”

Dr. Stehouwer brings a rich perspective to Sound Health, having traveled and lived around the world. She enjoys such destinations as Hawaii, but admits her most exotic adventures were not by choice: “My parents were missionaries, so I spent the first seven years of my life living in Nigeria.” Today, Stehouwer, her husband, two children and three dogs call Silverdale home. And though the locale is not quite as exotic, her activities and interests are far from mundane. “I quilt bedspreads and wall hangings. I love reading mysteries, gardening, running and cooking.” Stehouwer values the time she spends with her family, and credits her parents for shaping her and her approach to life. She also credits her deep Christian faith, which centers and motivates her.
